UC Santa Barbara students have shown their commitment to campus sustainability by choosing to assess themselves a quarterly fee to create grants for small sustainability projects on campus. The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) Matching Fund, administered by the student-majority TGIF Committee, enhances the student grant program by allowing them to award larger grants to more substantial projects that reduce UCSB's impact on the environment. Projects that can be funded include solar or wind power, water catchment systems, and on-site composting. These will help reduce the campus's use of resources and allow UCSB to achieve its goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.
